At Legacy Middle School in Newark, NJ, after school Fellow-led clubs are curated based on student interest and what Fellows enjoy. Each club is unique and allows students to express their passions and interests while building Fellow-student relationships.

Read on to learn about some of the Fellow-led clubs at Legacy!

Art Club

Jacob Garcia is the leader of the Art Club. Art Club is where scholars create new, unique art projects every week. Jacob started this as a journalism club that would feature some art projects; however, he shared that the scholars were more interested in art, so they shifted to fully focus on that. The club has focused on painting canvases, working with dry clay, and painting mason jars. Both the Fellows and scholars participate and make their own art projects. For the remainder of the year, their plan is to focus on more unique projects that feature new supplies such as weaving yarn.

Creative Writing Club

The Creative Writing Club is led by Fellow Jada Carrington. During their meetings, scholars do “free writes” to start and then work on writing that contributes to their club writing theme: the future. In the month of February, they specifically worked on Black History Month poems shown below. Jada writes and performs poetry herself, so she wanted to pass on the knowledge to scholars. Her personal goal for the year is to create a collective poem featuring a few lines from each scholar in the club. She would like to perform the final piece to celebrate her scholars and their year together.

Theater Club

Fellow DeShawn Thomas, leads the Theater Club at LMS. DeShawn, who studied theater in college, is a performer himself. In Theater Club, DeShawn primarily works on acting, singing, and perfecting stage presence. This month, the scholars have been focusing on the skills of auditioning. DeShawn’s goal is not to just teach scholars how to perform on stage, but give them all the tools they would need to be a performer. At the end of the year, the club hopes to put on an end of the year showcase full of unique scholar performances!

Dungeons & Dragons Club

The Dungeons & Dragons Club, or D & D Club, is led by Ryan Masser. Ryan acts as the “Dungeon Master,” who organizes the game and acts as a referee during play time. In the game, each scholar creates a unique character in a fantasy world. Some examples of scholar’s characters that Ryan shared are sorcerers and knights. Ryan didn’t initially create this club and it almost didn’t happen, but he heard that there was  a big group of scholars that loved the game and he stepped in to lead. Ryan loves the game and knew he had a lot of knowledge and fun to share. Members are hoping to continue to expand their imaginations and keep their game going!

Crochet Club

Delia Lawrence created the Crochet Club at LMS. Crochet Club allows scholars to learn how to crochet or expand their knowledge of crocheting. Delia loves to crochet and is always making gifts for the Fellows and staff, so she wanted the scholars to be able to do the same. When they meet, they work on different crocheting strategies and different projects. Scholars are working on things such as hats, bags, coasters, scarves, and more! Each student gets to work on a project of their own choosing. Delia takes time to work with each student one-on-one to make sure their projects are going the way they hope. Their goal for the year is to complete their current projects and if there is time, start an additional project!
