Teacher Residency Program

Program Details

Your Pathway to Classroom Teaching

The GO Teacher Residency is a site-based teaching apprenticeship that combines hands-on classroom experience with on-the-job mentoring, graduate coursework, and pathways to full teacher certification. Residents earn their Master of Arts in Teaching while learning to lead classrooms with confidence.

How It Works

1

Apply – Interested candidates apply in the fall and winter for the following school year.

2

Graduate School Support – The Residency Team guides candidates through graduate school applications and enrollment.

3

Enroll – Residents join one of our graduate partners: NYU Steinhardt, Relay Graduate School of Education, Western Governors University, or Trinity Washington University. Classes begin the following summer.

4

GO Bridge Program – Before school starts, Residents participate in GO’s Bridge Program, a year-long professional development sequence. They also receive housing and a living stipend.

5

School-Based Residency – During the school year, Residents balance coursework with teaching in a GO partner school alongside a Mentor Teacher, who gradually releases responsibilities until Residents are ready to lead independently.

6

Teaching & Certification – By year’s end, Residents are teaching full class periods multiple times per week, applying for certification, and preparing to transition into full-time teaching roles.

7

Employment Pipeline – Residents benefit from strong connections across the GO network, giving them a competitive advantage when applying for full-time positions

IN THEIR WORDS

Resident Experiences

The Teacher Residency Program has had a profound impact on both my teaching practice and professional growth. It has transformed my instructional skills, especially in differentiation and engaging diverse learners. On a professional level, the program has allowed me to slow down and approach my work with purpose. It has helped me build confidence in my abilities and establish a strong professional identity. I no longer feel like I’m simply going through the motions of a job but instead take pride in my role and the impact I have on students’ lives.

Briana Liverpool, Humanities Teacher Resident
Second-year GO Teacher Resident at GO-NYC

“The GO Teacher Residency program has impacted me because I feel like I am becoming the teacher that I wish I had in my classrooms when I was in school. I now understand from my training what it means to build a classroom culture where students’ identities, families, talents, and wealth of knowledge is celebrated and appreciated.”

Former Teacher Resident and Current Assistant Principal of Instruction
Teacher Resident Clint Brown

Through my classes and the guidance of my mentor teachers, I have developed a deeper understanding of how to differentiate instruction, address diverse needs, and create a classroom environment where all students feel valued and motivated. Receiving constant feedback on my teaching practice has allowed me to figure out what works best for me and make changes that directly benefit my students.
