History
Founded in 2011 as the Great Oaks Foundation and now operating as GO Tutor Corps, GO provides students with access to a quality education through high-impact tutoring. We envision an America where every child has the support of a tutor to enable them to realize their full human potential. The work began alongside Great Oaks Charter Schools in Newark, where a school-day tutoring corps proved a simple idea that still anchors the model: when students meet consistently with a well-prepared adult who plans with the teacher and is coached to high expectations, academic and social gains follow. As schools asked for more, the tutoring program grew beyond the original network, opening in New York City in 2013 and Bridgeport, Connecticut in 2014 and launching the GO Teacher Residency Program to pair graduate coursework with full-time school experience.
Between 2016 and 2020 the approach matured and codified its non-negotiables: tutoring during the school day; at least 90 minutes per week in ELA and or math; very small groups no larger than four in person and 1:2 for virtual delivery; the same tutor paired with the same students for continuity; tight alignment to classroom scope and sequence; and weekly observation and coaching using school-approved materials. In 2023 GO launched in Washington, DC and expanded in Massachusetts in 2024, joining established partnerships in New York and New Jersey. Today GO operates across NY, NJ, CT, MA, and DC, with targeted growth planned for MD and VA. Since inception, nearly 2,000 tutors have provided high-impact tutoring to approximately 27,000 students in grades 3–12; in School Year 2025–26 GO will serve nearly 3,000 students across six states. By 2024 the tutoring program had become a distinct engine for high-impact tutoring and educator development known as GO Tutor Corps, and in September 2025 we launched a virtual option that upholds the essence of GO’s core practices and scales GO’s impact and reach.
