Khalilah Baber

Khalilah Baber (she/her) served at Great Oaks Legacy Charter School in Newark, NJ in 2016. She is now the senior manager of mentor recruitment at iMentor in NYC. Learn more about Khalilah below!

What was your favorite tutorial moment?

I was blessed to have 3 phenomenal 7th grade girls who were brilliant and A students. We got really close and it was fun to give these 3 girls some advice on middle school “dating.” I always said that boys were not that important, while keeping it professional. The girls admired my sense of humor and honesty.

How did the Fellowship help you figure out what you’re doing next?

I learned that I really enjoyed talking with teachers, hearing about their “why,” and building community within schools. After I discovered that, I was encouraged to try talent acquisition and recruitment. I was fortunate to have a staff member see my people skills and point it out.

Would you recommend this program to others?

YES! My service year shaped my personality and how I engage with colleagues every day. You truly learn to work with a wide array of people and personalities in your service year.

What did your year of service teach you about yourself?

It taught me that I could accomplish hard things and that it’s OK to make mistakes and not know everything.

Favorite ice cream flavor?

Mint chocolate chip or cake batter
