Recruitment Trends Up as End of Cycle Nears

May 29, 2023

With a few days still left in May, GO’srecruitment team has netted a record 454 applications for the month from people interested in providing a year of service as an AmeriCorps member through the GO Fellowship.

Given that only 1 out of every 8 applicants will make it into the program, there is still work to be done to meet the sizeable demand for these tutor/mentors for the coming school year, however GO has now filled 85% of the positions needed to match with students in partner schools.

To help finish out the recruitment cycle which runs through July, a public service announcement (PSA) ad will drop this week (click here to view PSA) promoting this opportunity to recent graduates. The irreverent ad was written and produced on a pro bonobasis by Mitchell Akselrad, who was able to get friends in Hollywood to donate their time and talent to create it. Mitchell, a veteran TV writer, is the son of board member Susan Akselrad; the PSA includes a cameo by GO Foundation board chair Adam Weinstein.

As GO looks ahead to next year’s recruitment cycle, it expects even stronger numbers based on several factors:

  • a broadened pool of applicants which includes high school diploma holders, retirees as well as stay-at-home moms & dads;
  • a significant boost in the living allowance for the 2024-24 academic year recently announced by AmeriCorps which will make the opportunity viable for a larger number of people; and
  • an increasingly sophisticated and robust recruitment effort led by GO’s Director of Recruitment, Darius Rose.
